The Global Bamboo Demand
The Ministry of Agriculture in India predicts that the global market for bamboo will reach $25 billion by 2017. The usable features of bamboo are in demand throughout the world.
Over 1 billion people live in houses made of bamboo. In India alone 2.2 million tonnes of bamboo is used for paper annually. The demand also extends into the renewable energy sector, where bamboo is used as a replacement for traditional energy sources such as oil and gas.
In terms of supply, Asia is by far the largest manufacturer of bamboo products whilst China is the biggest exporter. At present the market share of bamboo products is still marginal compared to wood products, nevertheless it is annually increasing. Most bamboo harvested for commercial use is from naturally growing stands, however in recent years, more attention has been given to bamboo plantations.
Bamboo is “the timber of the 21st Century” as per BBC magazine
Bamboo is being hailed as a new super material, with uses ranging from textiles to construction. It also has the potential to absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide, the biggest greenhouse gas, and provide some of the world’s poorest people with cash.
There is a rapidly growing recognition of the ways in which bamboo can serve us as consumers and also help to save the planet from the effects of climate change because of its unrivalled capacity to capture carbon.
“From the field and the forest to the factory and the merchant, from the design studio to the laboratory, from the universities to those in political power, people are more and more aware of this potentially renewable resource,” says Michael Abadie, who took up the presidency of the World Bamboo Organisation last year.
New technologies and ways of industrially processing bamboo have made a big difference, enabling it to begin to compete effectively with wood products for many markets.
It is estimated that the world bamboo market stands at around $10bn today, and the World Bamboo Organisation says it could double in five years.
The developing world is now embracing this potential growth.
Bamboo Information
How it is made?
Bamboo textile fibre is made from bamboo timber which has matured in many Chinesee forests for at least 4 years.
In summer, when new shoots reach their full height, they are marked with a year code which makes sure they are harvested at the right maturity. When harvested they are taken to mills where they are crushed and submersed in a strong solution of sodium hydroxide which dissolves the bamboo cellulose. With the addition of carbon disulfide it renders the mix ready to regenerate fibres which are then drawn off, washed and bleached to a bright white colour and dried. The resultant fluff is very long in staple and visibly finer than other fibres.
After that, they are spun into yarn, like any other textile fibre. The longer staple and higher tensile strength is what makes a tough, soft yarn – which is not as susceptible to wearing and fraying as many other yarns. This is what gives bamboo fabrics excellent durability. The hollowness of the fibre contributes to its very high level of absorbency.
The two main chemicals used in the process are sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide. With an adequate ventilation and a careful process both elements are not toxic or poisonous.
Is it sustainable?
In China, as elsewhere in the world where bamboo is cultivated, bamboo forms a very dense root mat. Bamboo does not have a tap root like trees but has a root mass like other grasses. Bamboo is also partly deciduous with a lot of leaf and culm sheath drop and subsequent rejuvenation.
Therefore the bamboo forest floor is constantly covered with a thick cover of leaf mulch which, in turn, breaks down and naturally composts the soil. During heavy rain, any run off water is quite clear and clean, even on steep mountainsides, bearing testament to an almost complete lack of erosion.
Many of the bamboo forests have been there for hundreds of years without any need to replant them as they naturally constantly regenerate themselves with new shoots every year, even with regular harvesting of mature timber.
Bamboo yarns and textiles are produced without the use of dangerous toxic chemicals and no polluting residues remain in the cloth when it finally wears out and is discarded. It comes from nature and it is returned to nature in a smooth natural cycle. It has been grown and husbanded for thousands of years without environmental degradation. This means it is a complete sustainable fiber. Very few crops can make this claim.
Main properties
Bamboo fibre has many excellent properties that make it ideal for processing into textiles.
- Smooth, Soft and Luxurious Feel: Bamboo fiber can be softer even than silk fiber when spun into yarn. It has a basic round surface which makes it very smooth and to sit perfectly next to the skin.
- Good Absorption Ability: Bamboo fiber absorbs and evaporates sweat very quickly. It’s ultimate breathability keeps the wearer comfortable and dry for a very longer period. It is 3-4 times more absorbent than cotton fabrics.
- Temperature Adaptability: Fabrics made from bamboo fiber are highly breathable in hot weather and also keep the wearer warmer in cold season. Bamboo is naturally cool to the touch. The cross-section of the bamboo fiber is filled with various micro-gaps and micro-holes leading to much better moisture absorption and ventilation. It is also very warm in cold weather, because of the same micro structure as the warm air gets trapped next to the skin.
- Antibacterial: Bamboo is naturally antibacterial, antifungal and anti-static. Many tests have been conducted whose results show over 70% death rate after bacteria was incubated on bamboo fiber fabric. Tests shows that, even after fifty washes, bamboo fabric still possessed these properties. It makes bamboo fabrics healthier, germ free and odor free.
- Health care: Surveys show that amino acids that are contained in bamboo give positive impacts on people’s skin improving its energetic balance (e.g. Bamboo charcoal health socks).
- Environmentally friendly: Bamboo is the most revivable natural recourse. Its cultivation does not require fertilizer sand pesticides, thus, it makes no negative effect on the environment. Moreover, its quick growth and absence of pollution in places of developing make impossible the accumulation of harmful substances in its trunks. Bamboo fiber is decayed in soil by microorganisms due to which the environment is not polluted at all.
Its applications
After gaining popularity as a green fiber, bamboo has found place in significant fashion circles and textile uses.
- Bamboo Clothing: The inherent anti fungal and antibacterial properties of bamboo fabrics make it suitable for such clothing as underwear, t-shirt and socks. It is especially preferred for making summer clothing as it gives protection against UV rays and for being naturally cool. The softness, sheen and drapability of bamboo fabric make it suitable for fashion clothing and accessories. As it has good absorption and is breathable, it can be used in making any type of garments especially sports wear and inner wear. The softness of bamboo yarn also makes it ideal for infant wear.
- Bathroom Textiles: Bamboo fabric is increasingly being used in making bathroom furnishings. Bamboo bath towels and bath robes have soft and comfortable feel and excellent moisture absorption capability. The natural antibiotic property provides hygienic conditions as well as prevents bad odour. They are also suitable for making bath mats due to good absorbency.
- Home Furnishings Fabrics: Bamboo fabric has also come to occupy important place in manufacturing of home furnishings due its many qualities including, softness, strength, & durability among others. It is used in making cushion covers, table linen, bed linen, curtains, beddings and pillow, kitchen linen etc. Wallpapers and curtains made from bamboo fabric can absorb ultraviolet radiation very well. Upholstery fabrics are usually made with bamboo blends.
- Non woven fabrics: Bamboo pulp is also used for making non woven fabrics that are then used in realizing hygiene products such as sanitary napkin, masks, mattress, absorbent pads, food-packing bags. Again, they are preferred for such items due to anti-bacteria and absorption properties.
- Medical and Hygienic Clothing & Products: Apart from non wovens, bamboo fabric itself is also used in the production of such items as textiles for surgical practices including masks, bandage, gowns etc. apart from linens, towels and drapes in hospitals.
